Join the CRP NYC Chapter and our special guest Rina Madhani from Start Lighthouse who will speak to us about fostering youth activism and climate activism in young children in the Bronx. Also on the docket is an update from our OCM lobbying team with details below.

About our special Guest

Rina Madhani is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Start Lighthouse. As an educator in the Bronx, Rina witnessed the inequities that have become institutionalized within our education system. She realized that the biggest barrier to literacy was access to books and a lack of culturally affirming spaces in and outside of the classroom. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she founded Start Lighthouse, an organization addressing childhood illiteracy through an intergenerational approach.

Our Climate Moment Update

Our NYC Chapter would like to celebrate the 3-month anniversary of our federal lobbying campaign called Our Climate Moment. Launched on Earth Day 2021, the NYC OCM team have already met with 6 members of the US Congress to express our demands that climate change provisions be included in the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the upcoming budget reconciliation. The offices of Senator Schumer & Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Nydia Velazquez, Hakeem Jeffries, Grace Meng & Carolyn Maloney have all expressed their support for our demands and activities in support of strong climate action. We have also begun to use our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram & Twitter) to build our community, educate & inspire to act. And we have actively participated in coalitions in the successful efforts to stop the Keystone XL & Byhalia pipelines.

Our plans for the next three months include:

  • Develop long term relationships with the Representatives we have met to ensure that action on climate change doesn’t get thrown under the Congressional bus.

  • Meet with the rest of the NYC delegation (Meeks, Clarke, Nadler, Maliotakis, Espaillat, Torres & Bowman) to show them New Yorkers are concerned about doing everything possible to slow down and stop climate change.

  • Expand our social media outreach.

  • Make the OCM website a destination for climate activists to act & celebrate our successes.

Join us at the NYC Chapter meeting on July 27th to hear about these lobbying efforts and to see if you want to join the team! There are many opportunities to participate, including signing petitions, amplifying social media actions, and meeting with your elected representatives!
